Anonymous asked: I gotta pick a college soon and I don't really know what I want. What did either/both of you major in? Did it help you get your jobs at Conan? Did it prepare you for your job?
I majored in Telecommunications (they didn’t have a true Broadcasting Major when I was there), and what helped me the most BY FAR was all the extra curricular things I did: my heavy involvement with the fantastic MSU Telecasters, my multiple shifts a week at the insanely awesome college radio station 88.9 The Impact; my job working at the local cable access station WEMU, and just making videos and shit in my free time. By the time I got to the point in my classes where I was supposed to “learn stuff”, I already knew it all and had been doing it on a daily basis. What helped me get my job was my internship - and being helpful and friendly while I was an intern. I would say all the things I’ve done have helped me (and continue to help me) get the job I want; not really prepare me for a job I already somehow got. Does that make sense? I write comedy because I was already doing it; I produce segments because I was already doing it; I shoot & edit videos because I already knew how to shoot & edit videos. Do everything, and that’ll show you what you like to do and what you should be doing for a job. And don’t stop doing what you love when you get the job you want. Don’t stop, ever. - Bley
